The young people who join the Police Department's Explorer program gain valuable leadership skills while being taught responsibility for others in their community. This is accomplished while having fun in a supportive atmosphere where self-discipline is encouraged.
The Explorers are educated in law enforcement topics such as police ethics, traffic accident investigations, issuing tickets, public relations and how to direct traffic. The Explorers also have specialized units such as Bike Patrol on the trails, Honor Guard and S.E.R.T. (Special Explorer Response Team). S.E.R.T. competes bi-annually in local and out of state competitions. Additional training includes paintball and repelling.
