When a violation of the City's Code of Ordinance regulations and/or requirements exists this is known as a code violation. A code violation can be generated by Code Enforcement Officer routine inspections or by citizen complaints. When a citizen complaint is received, a Code Enforcement Officer investigates the property reported in the complaint.
When code violations are observed the Code Enforcement Officer issues a Code Violation Warning Notice which will include a compliance date (the date by which the violation(s) need to be corrected). Warning Notices are mailed to the property owner and when applicable the tenant. The ideal outcome to strive for is compliance within the requested time.
The compliance date for code violations is subject to change if the property owner/tenant requires additional time to bring the property into compliance. A compliance date extension must be requested and approved in order to allow additional time to correct the violation(s).
After all attempts to attain compliance are exhausted, the Code Enforcement Officer will issue a Citation to either the property owner and/or tenant for resolution through the Municipal Court system. The defendant is required to appear at Municipal Court on the date shown on the citation.
